Patrick Looking Fab.....

Stumbled accross this on the internet, I'm sure you all remember Patrick's story from early last year. This happened in America where Pitbulls aren't a banned breed, and shows that despite a breed's reputation nothing can compare to the cruelty the human race is capable of. Pleased your doing well big guy. He's a reminder of what he went through:

"Kisha Curtis, the alleged abuser of a beautiful Newark pit-bull puppy named Patrick, was finally handed down an indictment of Fourth Degree Animal Cruelty for abandoning and starving the 1-year-old pit bull in March, by the New Jersey’s Grand Jury. Her sentence, if found guilty, can carry up t0 18 months in jail.

Patrick was found stuffed in a plastic bag in the garbage shoot of a 22-floor apartment building. Ms. Curtis, who lived on the 19th floor, denies having stuffed the emaciated puppy in the garbage bag and having thrown him in to the garbage shoot. Patrick weighed 19 lbs. and was 1–2 hours away from death when the building maintenance man found him. Patrick was sent to Garden State Veterinary Specialist, in Tinton Falls, to recuperate. He is currently weighing 51 lbs and is in a loving foster home."

We had a blossoming new romance at The Rescue Place this week, as after a great deal of socialising, Duke met a lady off lead for the first time. Gema is a great playmate, and she is always fun around the boys. I think you can see from these pictures that it was a good match, and for anyone who remembers the abused and naive dog that Duke was when he arrived, these pictures may seem amazing. Duke didn't even know how to play with a toy never mind another dog. So proud of you big Brindle, and thank you so much Gema.

I enjoyed a walk on the beach yesterday with my Double D's Dusty and Dudley. Both of these dogs were left abandoned and with serious illness's. Yet they are two of the most loving and biddable dogs you could ever meet. I'm lucky to foster them both on behalf of SHAK, and the reaction and admiration that they both get from people on meeting them and hearing their stories is testament to what these dogs represent. Thanks to the stranger who kindly took these photos of me and my boys after getting cuddles off the pair of them.

New Year, New Life For Little Suki.....

A quick update on Suki the Saluki who we took in just before Christmas in desperate need of a cruciate ligament operation. As you can see she is relaxing into her new foster life and is recovering well. Her new Dad tells me that she saw in the New Year by watching the swimmers taking their new year dip in the north sea, before a trip to Monkseaton to watch the morris dancers. In the short time she was with us she won everyones hearts. We're all just so pleased that she has found the life she should of had in the first place.

Sad Day As We Lose Jake.....

A sad day today as a great family lost their pride and joy, and SHAK lost the best ambassador we could of ever wished for. After being unwell for a while, including having part of his bottom jaw removed with a tumour, Jake left us all for Rainbow Bridge. An MRI scan revealed a further 3 tumours, 2 being on his spine on the other being in his spleen. Despite being so brave and strong, Jake couldn't go on.

Jake's story is one I will never forget. He was without doubt the smelliest and most matted dog I have ever seen. After being dropped by his transporter at a vets, I walked in to collect him and was met by such a stench. "Whats that? I enquired thinking there was problems with the drains. "Your dog" came the reply as I was handed a lead and shown the door.

The big guy scrubbed up well though, and when the Nichol family came to me on the look out for their first family dog, I knew exactly who they needed. The rest is history, as Jake became a permanent fixture at nearly every SHAK fundraising event. The support that dog gained for us simply by his Dad showing the pictures of how he used to be, was truly amazing.

Above is a picture of him the day he arrived, and also a picture of perhaps his proudest hour, winning Rescue Dog Of The Year 2011 at the Hillheads Dog Club Show.

There is nothing I can say that will make any of this any easier John and his family, but I will say this. You can always be proud of yourselves and him for turning the smelliest and most matted dog ever, into the finest example of what we do, that any charity could ask for.

Jake was perfect, and you were all perfect for him, if ever a dog and a family were meant to be it was you and Jake. My thoughts are with you all.

A DOG charity which saves pets from death row is appealing for volunteers to help continue its work.

Shak – which stands for Safe homes and kindness – was set up five years ago by Stephen Wylie, 37.

Named after his dog that died suddenly from lymphoma, Shak takes in dogs which would otherwise have been put to sleep.

And pooches from Southampton to Inverness have been rehoused at the charity’s kennels on a farm north of Alnwick.

Stephen said: “We take in the dogs that no one else wants.

“We take those with illnesses and medical conditions. When nobody else wants to help, we give them a chance.

“Shak was the name of my dog, a German shepherd-cross, who died out of the blue. I got him from a dog shelter and I decided to give up some time to volunteer.

“I did some dog walking and it just came about that way. I had my own business at the time and came to an agreement with my business partner, packed that in and set up Shak.

“It’s taken five years to get to where we are now, but it is so rewarding.

“Some of the dogs we take in have had such a bad time.

“I have been bitten before as well but it is brilliant when you work out why that bite has happened and you can stop it happening in the future.

“It’s just a passion.

“When a dog is taken by a pound it is given ten days before it is put to sleep. That’s where we come in.

“They come here and we deal with any problems they have had. We try to understand why they have problems.”

Five-year-old Shane, a German Shepherd, would have been put down had Stephen not taken him in.

“He had huge behavioural problems because his owners hadn’t socialised him,” he said.

“When we went to get him he was ready to bite anyone that came near him.

“But now he’s great. You have to train them physically and mentally.”

Ellie, a two-year-old Staffordshire Bull terrier was a stray. Stephen ‘fell in love’ with her face and she’s still learning.

There are around 52 dogs currently living at Shak and it is hoped that some will be rehomed as part of the charity’s forever foster scheme.

Stephen add: “We have to make sure that the owner is right for the dog, we lead them in to taking a foster dog with coming for walks, afternoons at homes and sleepovers to get the dogs acclimatised.

“But some of them will never be rehomed.”

However because of the amount of dogs now being housed by Shak, more volunteers are needed to carry out an array of duties.

Dog walkers, people to clean food bowls, kennel cleaners, fund-raisers and more are wanted to help keep it going.

The charity runs entirely on donations, with most of its food provided by others.

But its biggest expense is vet bills.

Stephen said that they use a surgery in Backworth which is used to them bringing in new dogs to get checked out when they come in.

People can also leave donations at the vets to pay for medical bills.

Alongside the dogs at the kennels Shak has around 15 dogs with foster families and six at his own home.

One of those is Dudley, who was driven to a field in Kent and left.

He has Chronic Degenerative Radiculo-Myelopathy, which affects his muscles.

I spent the last afternoon of 2011 at the Seaside with a dog that has made such a huge impression in such a short time. Your all aware of Dudley's story, but its amazing the interest this handsome boy gets wherever he goes. He made a lot of new friends this afternoon both canine and human, and as the year grows to a close I feel honoured that I've shared some of it with him.

Mr Wylie, I have a complaint!

When we agreed to "forever foster" Shabby we were lead to believe we were taking on a skinny little old lady lurcher. Following treatment for a nasty case of mange it now seems we have a tubby little lurcher puppy! I thought having brought up a Labrador I knew all about doggy excitement but this little girl takes the biscuit:-)

From a scabby looking underweight elderly looking dog who would no doubt have been put to sleep had she not been lucky enough to be picked up by you, we have a thriving young dog who has made our home hers. She may not be the most beautiful dog but she's all ours and we thank you for giving her and so many other dogs a last chance.

A VETERAN charity volunteer has pledged to continue his vital fundraising work in 2012 ... despite problems caused by moving his makeshift cafe to a new location.

Dedicated Derek Hepple, 70, says takings have dipped and he is faced with increased logistical problems since switching his homemade catering operation from the driveway of his home to a public car park across the road, on the Northumberland coastline.

The former police officer raised more than £10,000 for dog rescue charity SHAK by selling hot drinks and scones every Sunday from two caravans parked on the driveway of his home in Marine Drive, Seaton Sluice.

But a year ago he was cut back to just two Sundays a month by council bosses following complaints from his next-door neighbour about the scale of his fundraising activities.

The decision – which only gave him temporary permission for another 12 months – resulted in less money for SHAK and worries that he could be stopped altogether.

Later a new compromise was reached under which Derek was allowed to resume running the cafe every Sunday and Bank Holiday, but had to move it to the nearby car park.

The new arrangement has now been running for 10 weeks and he admits that business has been slow – with weekly takings of between £110 and £140 compared with the £250 he was making for the charity from his driveway.

Yesterday Derek said: “I used to have the two caravans on my drive, which passers-by couldn’t miss, but now I only have one caravan in the car park, and I’m behind a bit of a hill.

“It was horrendously quiet when I first moved over, but that is also to do with the time of year.

“Every Sunday I have to tow the caravan across to the car park, open the barrier and physically wheel two portable generators over and power them up. It is a lot more work and hassle than it used to be. I have had lots of people say they thought I had given up, but I’m still here every Sunday from 7.30am until it gets dark.”

Derek raises funds for Bedlington-based SHAK – Safe Homes and Kindness – which rescues abandoned, mistreated and sick dogs that would otherwise be put to sleep.

He said: “They currently have about 70 dogs to look after so income and funding is needed more than ever.”

Christmas Update.....

Christmas has come and gone for another year, and the support we have received has been amazing. Treats, toys and a whole load of food started to arrive a few days before Christmas and is still arriving now. Thanks to everyone who has donated, and also to the people who took the time to arrange the collections. We got a huge amount from both Pets At Home in Cramlington and Hillheads Dog Training Club, Whitley Bay Pet Supplies and the girls from Seaton Lodge Stables. We appreciate every bag or tin, and the support you give by donating to us, so thank you.

I'd also like to my team for giving up they're Christmas to give our dogs a wonderful one. This year I was even forced to take Christmas day off to spend time with my little girl, and the team came up trumps to cover. We do a difficult job, and in the cold bleak winter it becomes even harder. The dedication that's been shown over Christmas has been magnificent, right from the kennel hands to the fundraisers, so on behalf of me and the dogs, thank you all so much.

Speaking of the kennels, work has continued despite the holidays. I'm delighted to say that Suki has continued her recuperation after her cruciate ligament operation, and this week is moving into a full time Forever Foster home to continue her progress.

Dudley appears to be walking better again, but obviously it's taking it day by day. He is such a strong dog, a real fighter and he adored what may of been his first family Christmas, he also saved people buying me slippers as he never moved from on my feet all day.

Friendships and romances are still blossoming at the kennels, and big Hugo is the latest to show an interest in the girlies.

A Turn For The Worse.....

After a couple of days being lame on one of his front legs, I took Dudley to the Vets this morning, and I'm afraid it isn't good news. It would appear that the Arthritis and Neurological condition is now starting to effect the font leg with all the sores on, and the out come has just taken a turn for the worse. We have agreed to give him some extra medication and see if there is any improvement, however I know I must begin to face up to the fact that I am going to lose a dog that has taught me so much. Dudley leaves an impression every where he goes. He is so brave and lovable, this world is so cruel at times. I love him so much, but have to do the best thing for him. In the meantime he is getting pampered more than you could ever begin to believe.

I'm sure you can all remember Coco (who is now called Holly) the chocolate Labrador who came to us grossly overweight having been booked in to get destroyed. Well here's some photos and and an update from her new Mam and Dad:

"Thought we'd give you a little update on Holly..

She's settling in well, loving all her walks and sniffing out new things.
We've managed to get nearly 7.0kgs off her since we took her home.. i don't
think she's that upset about not getting that extra sandwich any more!!!

Her paws are slowly healing too, think we've even got a few tufts of fur
growing through!

The pics were taken at the weekend at Tynemouth.. she's even managing a
little run now!! we've not mastered fetch with her yet, but we're working
on that one!!"

Suki Doing Well.....

I'm pleased to say that Suki is recovering well after her operation today. A phonecall tonight confirmed she was quite comfortable, had ate some tea, and had even put a little weight on that back leg when she'd gone out for a toilet walk. I'm pleased I picked her up, and I'm pleased that she'll get the best treatment as she gets her life back on track. Proud of you Suki.

Another whirlwind week has seen a lot of progress on all fronts, so forgive me if this update seems like a list. First of all some BIG THANK YOU's to the people who make all of this possible.

Last weekend the SHAK Tombola was once again at Pets At Home in Cramlington. Thanks to Joan, Sheila, Angie and Sonia for giving up their weekend to raise another fantastic amount. Also of course, thanks to Ant and his staff, and the customers of P at H for inviting us. Saturday also saw Elaine team up with Jen and Little Pixie Rabbit Rescue for a stall at Cramlington Craft Fair. Thanks to Elaine and thanks to Jen for arranging what sounds like a really fun day. Sunday of course saw Derek brave the elements once again to help us. I'm sure there are a lot better things he could do with his Sunday, yet he still turns out week in week out to raise funds for us. So thank you so much Derek.

The response to our food appeal recently was fantastic, but we always need more. Thanks to Whitley Bay Pet Supplies for another brilliant donation to help us through Christmas.

I've mentioned in the previous post about the support we have from Manchester, and on behalf of me, the SHAK team and the SHAK dogs, a MASSIVE THANK YOU to Kate and Lend Lease for a fantastic donation. The support Kate has given us over the last six months is nothing short of amazing, but thanks to the generosity of Lend Lease and her hard work we are now £1,500 better off to help keep the dogs warm through the winter.

Up at the kennels there has been some great work too. A new romance is blossoming with Honey and Riley becoming a nice couple, and they really do have some fun playing catchy kissy. Things are hectic right now, but I will try and get some photos of them playing soon.

Speaking of fun, its now official. Dudley has a better social life than me. On top of his swimming twice a week (he now refuses to get out of the pool, he loves it that much) today he went for a massage. Thanks to Trevor at 4 Paws Hydro therapy, Duds is improving and using his back legs more, and although we can't cure his condition he is definitely enjoying life. No bigger example than today when he actually fell asleep during his massage. Thanks Rachel for taking time to help him, the snores proved just how much he enjoyed it.

The pretty girl in the picture above is Suki, a lovely Saluki that I picked up as a stray. The picture is of a very nervous and frightened girl, who had a chain around her neck and a terrible limp. After serving her time we took her to the vets yesterday to find she has a ruptured cruciate ligament and needs an operation. Once again, Moorview Vets came up trumps, not only offering her the best treatment available, but by Kerry one of the staff also offering Suki a temporary foster home whilst she recovers. Above and beyond the call of duty, thank you.

Amazing Support. Thank You.....

The support we received last weekend was once again amazing, and I really mean that. I can remember when every penny raised for this charity was pretty much raised by me getting various parts of my body waxed or doing a sponsored something or other, so personally to have the number and events and supporters that did us proud last weekend really does mean alot.

During the day on Saturday it was the Little Snorters Christmas Party. I believe there was some great fancy dress costumes (on the dogs) and a great time was had by all. Thanks once again to Joan and Sheila for taking along the SHAK Tombola and a thank you also to Leah O'Sullivan for both the invite and the donation. The support we are gaining from the "Doggy World" is brilliant, and even more so when its the little dogs helping there less fortunate bigger pals.

Sheila and Joan then moved onto the Blue Bell Pub in Jesmond Vale for the SHAK Christmas Party. Thanks to Nic and all his staff and customers for another fantastic night. It was great to see some familiar faces who'd come along to lend support, even from as far afield as Manchester! Although I think the journey is worth it just to see Snarf the German Shepherd roaming the bar for strokes.

Sunday saw Derek brave the wintry conditions once again to sell hot drinks to cold dog walkers down at Seaton Sluice. This week I think a special mention goes to his wonderful wife Sandra, who despite some personal issues still insisted on making sure Derek had enough delicious scones to sell come the Sunday morning.

On behalf of everyone at SHAK thank you all so much. We have around 70 dogs in our care, and turn others away every day as we simply do not have the room to take them in. We couldn't help the ones that we do without your help. I'm just looking at Dusty, Dudley, JD and Star all curled asleep at my feet as I write this. Four SHAK dogs that found their way to my house. They'd probably be dead if it wasn't for your support. Thank you.

A Year On For Jack And A Day At Sainsburys.....

This week has been another one of those weeks that just flies by in a flurry. It also so the first anniversary of us losing old Jack. Jack was a wonderful old guy that came to us after his owner had been taken into hospital and then died. Jack collapsed just a few weeks later with spinal problems, and it was time for him to be back with his owner. Although the damage to the spine was the cause, I really think that he died of a broken heart. He was such a lovely dog, he left a big impression with his temporary SHAK family.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the bag pack at Sainsburys in Cramlington yesterday. It was a fantastic day, and the team were made to feel very welcome by the staff and management of Sainsburys. So thank you to them, and of course thank you to everyone who supported us.

Hydro For Dudley.....

Today was another big day for Duds, as he began his Hydro Therapy sessions. Work started today with the water filled treadmill, but you could see he was itching to get into the big pool! Another Trip To The SeaSide....

I know that you'll all probably be getting bored of seeing pictures of Dudley now, but I can't help but share these with you after another wonderful walk on the beach with my shadow this afternoon. At one stage he even tried to play with a ball daft Labrador, he just couldn't keep up though. Seems the sunshines every time we go to the Seaside, but even in the rain sharing these trips with him would be so great.

I'm delighted to say that after a weekend sleepover that turned into a three week vacation, Lexi has decided that she doesn't want to come back to the kennels. Alison and Michael have shown her so much love, and trips to the beach and then the pub, that I guess it was a tough decision for her to make. Lexi is a wonderful girl, such a treasure and good company. She should never of been with us, I'm so pleased she has found love. Only one thing remains left to sort out..... Alison when can I come and stay?

This weekend marks the second anniversary of Derek fundraising for SHAK down at Seaton Sluice. Despite the problems that were well documented this year, Derek's efforts on a Sunday have still raised the charity just under £17,000. A truly fantastic figure, and I think it is also important to thank the people that go down on a Sunday and support Derek in his efforts.

SHAK has grown unbelievably in the last two years, and the money raised by Derek has been a big part in that progress. So thank you Derek and Sandra for such wonderful work and support, and thank you to everybody that has bought a coffee over the last two years!

You can congratulate Derek tomorrow at Fountainhead Car Park, Seaton Sluice as normal, next to the toilet block. Thank you.

Thanks to Carol, Angie, Sonia and Nicola for taking the SHAK Tombola to Manor Walks Shopping Centre in Cramlington on Saturday. At the same time Sheila and Joan were at Jollyes Pet Store in Blyth with the Tombola Two. Thanks to the management, staff and customers of both venues for making us so welcome. Then of course Sunday saw Derek brave the rain for another full day of coffee making. The new venue means new customers, so thanks not only to Derek and Sandra but to everyone old and new who is supporting us.

He got such a fright when the first wave broke around his feet. Still he found a stick and we had some fun. In fact he didn't want to come out of the sea when it was time to go home.

A Day Of Vets And None Of It Nice.....

Today has been a very difficult one for me personally, but also for the SHAK Team and one of our long term fosterers. Of course that means that dogs have been effected, and in one instance paid the ultimate price.

Dudley was at the vets again for x rays on his back, and as expected it wasnt good news. There is definite arthritis present in his spine, you can see that clearly on the x rays, but also after several tests there appears to be some neurological damage too. Discs don't appear on x rays so an MRI scan costing four figures would be the only way to rule out Disc Disease and even after surgery the damage by the arthritis would mean he could never be fixed. It's the vets belief that my original and worst fears are perhaps the case, and that Dudley is suffering from CDRM, a condition that is rife in German Shepherds. There is no cure, all we can do is give him as much love as we can and be brave when the time comes. The ironic and almost sickening thing is that the X-ray also showed Dudley to have exceptionally good hips, something so many other GSD's don't have. Last night I slept with Dudley on the floor, if it was to be his last night with us (just a fear I had) he was going to be cuddled. Tonight he is still very groggy from such a traumatic day, but he is still getting the cuddles.

It's very sad that today too we lost the first ever Forever Foster dog, Max the German Shepherd. A beautiful sable boy, Max came to us with a weak backend, skin problems and suffering from nose bleeds. Eventually we got him well enough to look for a home, but because of his health nobody wanted him. That's when I came up with the Forever Foster scheme and enabling the dogs with health issues to get into homes by assisting with their vet bills. When Dawn met Max it was love at first sight, and he went on to have 3 years of a fantastic life, that we never thought he'd get. Ironically today his backend became too much for him and he lost the fight. Or did he? The simple fact he's left a family devastated and people like me feeling lucky to of help such a brave boy, means he was the winner in my eyes. Run free Max, you were an inspiration to this charity in ways you can't imagine. Our thoughts are with Dawn and her family.

To make matters worse we were alerted at 7.30am to a dog that was eventually destroyed at 10am this morning because we couldn't find space for another large dog. The sickening experience we have faced today with Dudley and Max makes this loss of life that could of been avoided so much harder to take.

It's been a busy seven days for fundraising, so thank you to everyone who has donated either financially or with food. Special thanks to Della and all the staff and customers at Wynsors World Of Shoes in Benton for last weeks fantastic Halloween fundraiser. Joan and Sheila were also there with the famous SHAK Tombola, and they also did a fantastic job at the Metro Centre today, so thank you ladies for giving up your weekends and all the hard work.

Thank you also to Heather for buying some insulating mats for the kennels, and to the management of Endurancemats who kindly expanded the order by donating a whole load more. As the cold comes in these mats will make a massive difference. Thank you.

With Dudley arriving in such dramatic circumstances on Sunday its meant I haven't been able to introduce Kes who also arrived this weekend. Kes is a little Lurcher who has got herself into bother after originally being abused. She is a playful girl, who is here to be assessed.

Kes has cheated the vets needle before, but this time we were there to provide an alternative. I'm just pleased we could help her.

Some Progress For Dudley.....

Some progress for Dudley today as Jonathon from Moorview rang with the results of his blood tests from Monday. The level of Calcium in his blood came back as normal, which is a good sign, however there is chronic and active infection. The plan is to continue with his current medication and then have x rays next week to see if the infection is causing the problems with Dudley's rear end.

In himself he appears stronger and the drinking isn't so obsessive. I'm hoping its not just wishful thinking, Dudley is a real hero of a dog and it feels like he's been he forever. We will do all we possibly can to get him through this.

After attaching himself to everyone he has met in the last 36 hours, having Dudley feels as if he has been around for ever. Tonight I braced myself for the trip I was dreading and took him to see Jonathon at Moorview Vets. After losing Scooby less than 2 weeks ago, and Spirit with bone tumours, I really was dreading this trip.

Jonathon was brilliant with him, and we have a little hope depending on blood test results. There appears to be a thickening of one of his anal glands, which in turn may be the reason of the excessive drinking. Excuse my lack of medical knowledge here as I try to explain this the best I can. The blood tests will determine how much calcium is in the blood, a high rate and we may have something unpleasant to deal with. So we are waiting for the results to come back.

After a thorough examination, Jonathon believes that the problems with his back end may be due to discs, whilst the front paw, pictured above may be due to some old ligament damage. Although known of which we can address until we have the test results back.

So tonight Dudley is back in my front room, we have done the best we can for him now we must wait. But boy is this boy worth the wait.

Where There Is A Will.....

Where theres a will theres a way, and some people have proved that today. Thanks to our own Heather and Chris making a big detour as they left Sussex for Northumberland, Dudley is now up here with us. He's currently relaxing after his tea in my front room, and he's doing extremely well after several days of massive upheaval. The big handsome lad is in a terrible state, there are certainly issues going on that I'm not going to comment on until a vet has given him a full examination, but I believe he will be another that breaks our hearts. Look at the photo above that was taken en route today, and think back to the fact that this dog was taken and dumped in a field left to die. I think the fact he has got this far makes this story a happy one no matter how it finishes.

Well, I received this email this morning and after a good laugh, I thought it was the perfect time to announce the fourth and final dog that had a sleep over last weekend. I'll let you you read into it what you like, take it away Foxy Roxy.....

Roxy's Report.

"Well dear SHAK readers-what a week.I am almost too worn out to scribble my report but it seems like no fireside snooze until I do. There I was a week ago paddling in the contents of my water bowl as always when that big bloke sticks a lead on me , puts me in the back of his car and next thing I know I have a vet staring at my sore eye and generally poking at me.Mind you I let him know with my Roxy growl that I was having none of it.But before I know it that big bloke (massive hands he has) was holding my head while the vet stuck needles in me-acupuncture it was not!

Anyway things improved later that afternoon when,guess what? I walk up the gardenpath and who is staring out the window at me but my old sparing partner-Handsome Harvey.Harvey showed me round his house and explained the big bloke who Harvey calls Dad isHarvey's butler,cook,cleaner and chauffeur.Harvey rents the upstairs of his house tothis Dad in exchange for his services.Anyway Harvey had organised Dad to set up a rather cosy bed in the corner, a double dish stand and a selection of toys for me.After a brisk walk on the beach it was back to Harvey's place for a spot of 2 star Michelin food-Turkey mince cooked in tomatoes,garlic and olive oil and served on a bed of moist dog biscuit-pity this Dad person has only one recipe but.

The rest of my week has been a blur of activity including back to the vets for my
little operation on my eye,walks every few hours and more bloody Turkey.Mind you I did have to laugh at Harvey's efforts to train his domestic help.Basically he gets this Dad person to give him lumps of liver every time Harvey sits or lies down or runs back after chasing a rabbit.Tried it myself and it works-unbelievable!

Today I was driven by Dad the chauffeur to something called a canine centre, and it was where I was introduced to lots of other dogs and two ladies who these dogs are training justlike Harvey is Dad.Not exactly sure what that was all about but seems like someonepassed something with flying colours and gets to take Dad for his Saturday training start day soon-wonder who it was?Attached a few pictures of me and Harvey .As you can see I have Dad groom me to shining perfection,my eye has mended well and lets face it I look gorgeous despite the extra couple of pounds I have put on this week.

I will keep you posted on Dads progress from Chez Harvey but must go and grab the bestspot next to the fire before Harvey notices me slipping past Dad as he washes our dinner bowls.

Dudley On His Way.....

I'm delighted to say that Dudley was saved from the pound today and has been placed in emergency kenneling until he is transfered up to ourselves on Sunday by our very own Heather.

He has been for a quick check up at the vets today, and has medication for the sores, however it would appear his back legs are causing the most concern.

More on this beautiful boy when he arrives, but thank you to Heather and Lisa Clark for saving his life.

I think the photograph above shows that Wilf is thoroughly enjoying his extended sleep over, in fact I've granted permission today to have his pass extended even further, so hopefully it will be a long term thing. He's been enjoying playing with his two new cousins (our very own Sparky and Skip) and tonight even ran off with a football much to the disgust of the boys trying to have a game!

Wilf was one of the 4 lucky dogs last week to have a weekend away, and this week its little Lexi who is staying with Auntie Alison.

"'Dudley' Which means 'From the peoples meadow'

This lovely friendly GSD was found collapsed in a field in the middle of nowhere. No I.D. & no chip.

He is in poor shape & is in need of veterinary care.
He has muscle wastage & weak back legs, he also has a growth of some sort on his left shoulder the size of a golf ball hidden under his thick coat of hair.
His right front leg has two problem areas, on the ankle & one of his toes with swelling & pressure type sores on both areas, causing him to use that front foot carefully & awkward.
He is drinking allot, which could be down to infection or other health problems. He needs a total M.O.T. at the vets.

'Dudley' as he is now named, is in a pound & his 7 days are up on friday, we have been asked to help him rather than he be Put to Sleep.

He is not ready to die & on meeting him today, he was the perfect gentleman, he licked my hand & then licked my 6 year old child, he nuzzled for love & his clear bright eyes told me he wants to live whatever life he has left with people who will love him.

We have found him a rescue placement who can offer him love & even a doggy wheelchair if needed!

What help do we need from you....
If 'Dudley' has not been claimed by friday, we will need to get him straight to the vets for treatment, we will then need to private board him in heated kennels until we can find volunteer transporters to transport him to Newcastle where his placement is, with SHAK a wonderful Large Breed Dog Rescue.
This will all cost, the vet bill, the kennel fee, the fuel for the transport run.. & then possible further vet fees once he is at SHAK..

We need donations to cover these costs so we can help 'Dudley'. Who the authorities believe was dumped in that field, with his weak legs & medical needs.. :(

We are expecting costs to run into the hundreds, but can not give you a definite estimate until we get him to the vets. Time just seems to slip by me, so here are some Thank Yous to everyone who has helped us fundraise or answered our cry for help for food over the last two weeks.

Thanks to both Jollyes and Whitley Bay Pet Supplies for wonderful donations, as well as an anonymous doner who dropped a whole load of bags off. And to every single person who has helped out by donating. The cupboard is no longer bare, but we need to keep the roll going.

With everything that happened last week I didn't get the chance to thank the team of girls for giving up their last two weekends respectively to fundraise at both the Cramlington and Sunderland Pets At Home Stores. Of course also Thank You to the staff of both stores and the people of both areas for making us so welcome. Last but not least, thanks to Derek, Sandra and all the people that support us down at Seaton Sluice on a Sunday. We appreciate all the effort you all put in.

This Sunday also saw the Little Snorters/Beauty and the Pooch Walk(in aid of SHAK)which I hear was a great day. Thanks to Leah and Beauty and The Pooch for arranging it, and to Lynn and our very own Honey for making a guest appearance! Honey was one of the 4 dogs we had out on sleepover over the weekend, and Lynn reports that once she settled she was great fun to have around. She made a lot of friends on the dog walk and got a lot of attention. A far cry from the bait dog that was described to me as evil.

Another slightly different run/walk was Sparky and Skip doing the Cumbrian Traverse with Trevor. Despite a fall and suspected cracked rib for their Dad all three completed the run, the two boys even doubled up as first aiders for their Dad.

Thanks to you all for doing so much to help us help the dogs that need it the most.

Speaking of the dogs on sleepovers, the other two are still in their potential homes. Their passes have been extended, so we're hoping for successful outcomes.

Coco came to us last night after her owner died and a relative booked her in to be destroyed. She is very over weight and has sores on her legs which we are treating. It appears that she hasn't been exercised for a long time and is thriving getting out for walks. Hopefully the walking coupled with a diet will get this beautiful girls life back on track. This weekend Coco is relaxing at Alisons house while we try and get her something permanent. Thanks Alison and thanks to Moorview Vets for giving her this chance.

Coco is one of four of our dogs having sleepovers this weekend. The other three are all long termers, and whilst one is just a vacation, the other two are with views to Forever Foster homes. I will let you know more after the weekend.

"Sparky and Skip are two collie dogs who were both abandoned and then rescued by SHAK big dog rescue. They now live together with Trevor Wakenshaw.

In order to raise funds for SHAK it was decided to do some sort of challenge but it had to be one the dogs could do as well.... Therefore we are doing the Cumbrian Traverse on October 22nd 2011. This is a mere 35 mile jaunt across the lakeland fells which includes 21 peaks and 12,000 feet of ascent.

Those doing the run are Sparky, Skip, Trevor Wakenshaw, Dave Johnson and Neil Scott. We have road support provided by Craig Bell and his German Shepherd dogs Lewis and Inca.

A Hug And A Kiss From Ellie.....

Life goes on, and time waits for no man, so today it had to be very much back to normal after the sadness and shock of losing Scooby yesterday. I'd like to thank the SHAK team who was in both yesterday and today, and also to say how very proud I am of the way they handled such awful circumstances, and also how well they supported me in something that I don't really think has sunk in. People often say to me "I couldn't do your job, it would hurt too much" well my team have proved in the last 24 hours that they are more than capable, and both myself and the dogs are very lucky to have them.

Nothing brings a smile to your face like a kiss from a dog, and today Ellie really warmed a my heart with affection. I picked her up as a stray and I couldn't help but fall for that face of hers. She is such a character, and really enjoys her strolls with our own Honey. We are actively looking for a Forever Foster home for her, so please get in touch via email (shak@shak.org.uk) if you would like to be considered for offering Ellie a home. North East of England only please.

Ellie is going to make someone a lovely pet, and today she showed me just how lovely life with her could be.

Today was a day I've been dreading for a long long time, the day I had to say goodbye to my best friend and the dog that had more of an influence on SHAK than anybody else, including myself.

Scooby came to SHAK in May 2009 with a horror story: tied to a tree, stabbed in the eye with a screwdriver, at the time it was the worst case of abuse we'd taken on. I drove to Birmingham to get him and he thanked me by biting me twice before I could even get him in the car. The sheer scale of the project I'd taken on was clearly apparent, 4 hours to get him in the car and a week and a half to get the lead I'd put on that day off, were just the start. However he made up for all of that and so much more.

Scooby was called "The Lord" because he ran the place, he kept his kennel nice, had a mattress that he slept on, and made a total mockery out of anyone who dismissed an abused dog as aggressive and destined to end up in a skip. Because of Scooby, SHAK changed focus, was recognised by the Kennel Club, and became the sanctuary for tortured souls that you now all know us for.

After looking a bit shabby yesterday an appointment was made for him to go to the vets this afternoon, however on arriving at the kennels this morning Jill found him collapsed in his kennel. Thanks to her and Mike for getting him into the SHAK Van, and a quick pitt stop so us exchange vehicles on the A1 and a rush to the vets.

I was with Scooby all the way, scans showed multiple tumours in his liver and I was shown the areas of internal bleeding that were killing my best friend. I had no choice, the dog that had both shaped the charity I formed and proved to the whole world that every dog deserved a chance, was dying on me.

Scooby left this world this morning surrounded by love and tears. Jonathon the vet at Moorview was incredible, and its testament to Scooby that he almost shed a tear with me (although I'm sure he won't admit it.)

Scooby was a legend, he will live on a legend, and an inspiration to me to continue to help the dogs that need it the most. No dog has ever given me more than Scooby. He taught me so much, and so many of the dogs at SHAK owe their lives to him. I wouldn't of had the confidence and skills to save their lives without him. I really don't know how I will go on without him, but I must. SHAK must. I am so so proud of everything he achieved, and getting bitten off him that first day was the best thing that ever happened to this charity.

Run free big lad, I miss you so much and owe you so much. You were SHAK, thank yo for showing us the way.

"Sunday 31st May 2009.

A manic day sees Scooby a badly abused German Shepherd arrive at SHAK. Scooby represents one of our biggest challenges yet, as he was found chained to a tree in his back garden after his owners had emigrated. Here’s the horror story, Scooby is blind in one eye after it is alleged he was stabbed in the eye with a screwdriver.

As you can imagine, Scooby is very insecure, and is showing signs of clear stress and fear aggression. However, under all of that, he did show me that he can be a nice dog, it’s just going to take a whole lot of time and hard work to help him trust people. The damage that has been done to this dog is truly sickening.

Several urgent phone calls and emails over Friday and Saturday lead to me bombing down to Walsall to offer this big guy a chance, and after a good start it turns out to be quite a day.

I was greeted by teeth and barking as I approached his kennel, but hot dog sausages soon put an end to that. After a few gentle strokes he allowed to handle his collar, and he was very pleased to see the lead. We had a wonderful 40 minutes walk and after more hot dogs and strokes, he was eager to jump into my jeep. That’s when things took a turn for the worst. As I tried to give him a little lift up, he turned on his blind side and promptly started chomping on my arm. I take full responsibility for this, as I shouldn’t have put him in this position. Scooby is obviously very defensive and feels vulnerable if he is physically handled. I think his lack of vision in his left eye and the fact that he has obviously been beaten accounts for so many of his issues.

What followed was a total nightmare, as Scooby decided he didn’t want to be near anyone. Even sedated he was very upset, and I think this poor guy has been through hell. He gets very distressed if you try and muzzle him, and unfortunately his immediate reaction is too lash out in self defence and not worry about the results, as long as people stay away.

Four long hours later, and having coaxed him into a cage,( A special thanks to John from Wrights K9– Academy for giving his time to help) we managed to lift the cage into the back of the jeep, and set off towards home and safety. Even with a 3 and a half hour drive, Scooby wouldn’t relax, and I just couldn’t help but feel so sorry for the way this boy has obviously been made to fear people.

This really is going to be a tough ride, but it is a battle we NEED to win. Scooby showed me on his walk that can live life as a normal dog, and that he is willing to trust people, we just have to get through his defences. Please say a prayer for him, so he can realise that not all humans want to hurt him, and then we can at least let him live out the rest of his life in peace."

Urgent Appeal For Food.....

Anyone who has ever been connected to rescue will know that things come in peak ands troughs. Well right now we're in the middle of a deep trough when it comes to food for the dogs. We are in dire need of both tinned and more desperately dried dog food. I think it's important to say that feeding the dogs is the most important part of our jobs, and that the dogs will be fed regardless, I certainly don't want to create a picture that paints starving dogs. However we have vets and kennel bills to pay aswell as other costs, so this is where I turn to you and ask for help.

We have food collection points at Pets At Home in Cramlington, Moorview Vets in Backworth, and of course Derek is now open every Sunday at Fountainhead Car Park at Seaton Sluice.

Hometime For Bono.....

A few weeks ago I showed some photographs like the one above of Bono, an emaciated Greyhound that had come into our care. Well, as you can see from the next three photographs above, Bono has game some weight and has also found a new home in the process. Thanks to Northumberland Greyhound Rescue for finding him a new family to love him the way he should be.

Special thanks though must go to our very own Sheena for rebuilding this beautiful dogs life as well as his body, and for getting him ready for his new start in life. As promised, here is Charlie and his new friend Tammy. Tammy came to us last week after being rescued from a life of abuse. She is still very nervous, but such a lovely dog and Charlie is showing her the way to the hearts of the SHAK team. It's nice that these two have found each other, as I was a bit apprehensive of Charlie being on his own after Maggie went home.

Two beautiful dogs that are at different levels of patching their lives back together after years of abuse, stuff like this makes me both sick and so proud of what SHAK achieves.

Two boys we are all very proud of are Oscar and Sonny, who are becoming good pals. Oscar on the left came to us with serious dog aggression issues, now he actually looks for Sonny to share his walks. Not sure who looks the happier on this picture, the dogs or the handlers.

A Dog That Really Is "Lucky".....

Another little SHAK guy going home today is Lucky. Picked up by me as a stray after a near collision with a car, Lucky spent a few days with me where he became good friends with my 4 and really settled himself in. He'd made such a big impression on the person who found him that he was on the phone everyday to see if he was ok. As his seven days are now up, Lucky has gone home with Daniel, the man who stopped and saved him a week ago. Having spent a lot of time with this little dog, I'm really not sure who the luckiest is.

There was progress with another dog going home today, let you know as soon as it happens.

There was mixed emotions today as Maggie said goodbye to Charlie and moved onto her new "Forever Foster" home. Maggie is a gorgeous girl who has done a wonderful job in helping Charlie discover the outside world, and now its time for her to have a wonderful new life herself. Good luck sweetheart, you deserve all the attention your going to get.

Don't tell Maggie, but Charlie already has a new Lady in his life, more on that soon, but I know he's really going miss his first girlfriend.

Introducing the SHAK Hotel Scheme.....

At SHAK we rescue over 100 dogs per year, usually in difficult circumstances and, when the dogs arrive, they are often very distressed and frightened.

Our initial aim is to provide them with a safe, comfortable kennel, regular meals, and exercise and, very importantly for these dogs, a sense of routine. Throughout this time they experience kindly and consistent care at our own kennels set in the middle of some glorious Northumberland countryside. As they recover, they are assessed and rehabilitated with many going on to be successfully rehomed through our forever foster scheme.

We need your help to provide these dogs with the accommodation and care they so badly need during this critical time for them. Our “Hotel Scheme” is a chance for you to participate in this work by supporting a dog or dogs at different levels depending on what you are able to contribute.

Any amount will be appreciated and well used by us in providing a place for them where they are safe and treated with kindness and understanding.

Massive THANK YOU to people who were fundraising for SHAK at three different events today. First up Dale and Jill who once again raised an amazing amount at a car boot sale, I know Dale will be pleased to have some space in the boot again, but everyone at SHAK really appreciates you and Jill giving up your day off. Likewise to Joan and Sheila who had a great day at Greenside Dog Show. This "double act" have worked really hard at all the events of late, and once again everyone really appreciates all you do. Fun Loving Nero.....

We've had a spate of Greyhounds and Lurchers turning up as strays lately, and here's the latest, Nero. When I picked him up, Nero was jumping with fleas. You could visibly see them jumping on his back.The neglect is also visible by the loss of fur on his back end.

I treated the flea problem immediately, and after the passengers had gone we were left with a wonderful lovable boy. Anyone looking for a fun dog really couldn't get much more fun than this handsome boy.

Sparky and Skip are two collie dogs who were both abandoned and then rescued by SHAK big dog rescue. They now live together with Trevor Wakenshaw.

In order to raise funds for SHAK it was decided to do some sort of challenge but it had to be one the dogs could do as well. Therefore we are doing the Cumbrian Traverse on October 22nd 2011. This is a mere 35 mile jaunt across the lakeland fells which includes 21 peaks and 12,000 fe...et of ascent.

Those doing the run are Sparky, Skip, Trevor Wakenshaw and Dave Johnson. We have road support provided by Craig Bell and his German Shepherd dogs Lewis and Inca.

Gorgeous Hugo.....

This wonderful big boy is Hugo, another stray I picked up and somehow squeezed in my Landrover. Hugo was found abandoned, tied to a tree and just left.

He has such a sad face, and is clearly bewildered about what has happened to him, but today round the back I saw the real Hugo. Playful but so strong, the torment he has suffered really was forgotten all with one rubber ring.

It was a nice day for Benjy today, as he went into a "Forever Foster" home. I picked this little guy up as a stray, and it immediately struck me that he was such a character. Wrap a red bandana around his neck and I'm sure he could of walked of any kids TV show. It was love at first sight today, we're all really pleased for the wee guy. Enjoy Benjy.
