Honey's Trip To Hillheads.....

Written by our guest columnist Lynn Sharp:

Today was another trip out for one of my absolutely favourite SHAK girls, Honey. Honey was a bait dog down in Birmingham when she was picked up with horrific facial injuries.  The idea behind a bait dog is not for fighting but for effectively 'dangling' in front of the fighting dogs to wind them up before they get set on each other. Somebody obviously didn't do their 'job' properly with Honey though and let one of the fighting dogs get hold of her and then they just decided to throw her out as an injured dog is no use to them.  She has been at SHAK some time now as she was a terrified wreck when she came in (especially with strange men) but is now just a spoilt, loving bundle of joy.

She came home with me saturday afternoon after calling shotgun on my mate Sally's seat in the car but unfortunately the weather wasn't good enough to put the roof down and have a proper girly road trip!  Bearing in mind Honey has probably never been in a house before I took her home for a weekend a few months ago she actually coped much better this time.  Last time she was at home with me she wouldn't settle, not in a distressed way but in a rescue dog, constantly looking for attention before you disappear kind of way.  Last night she seemed to get the hang of normal behaviour and chilled out on the floor on the living room (after the indignity of the obligatory bath which involved me getting far more wet than her!).  The only area she will need a little work on is toilet-training-wise.  She hasn't quite got the hang of taking advantage of being outside and was so distracted by being somewhere different she didn't go to the loo while we were out and so she had a little accident overnight.  She looked suitably horrified this morning though and if you don't live in a flat and have a garden (I am not set up to do this!) I'm sure she would get the hang of it quickly enough.

Today (Sunday) we joined Sheena and Hope, John, family and Blue, Carly, Amy and Brodie, Ben and Bear, Joan, Sonia and Cole at Hillheads Dog Show (apologies if I've forgotten anyone but there were a lot of us there!) to see if we could build any interest in Honey Bunch and maybe find her a home.  She responded really well to what must have been a pretty daunting situation for a dog that's only ever lived in barns and kennels.

She was letting people pat her quite happily and doing what dogs do when they meet each other!  You could tell she was nervous and there was the odd vibration coming up the lead (I couldn't actually hear the warning growls) when a dog that was too big for her got a little bit too friendly!

The afternoon finished with me entering Honey into two of the classes - most appealing eyes and best rescue dog.  During the appealing eyes class she was as good as gold and her eyeliner pretty eyes managed to win her a fourth place rosette.
When we came to the best rescue though she decided she was bored and just as the judge arrived to hear her story she decided to throw a 'diva strop' and started rolling on her back and showing off her tummy!  While the other dogs were telling their stories she took a wander off into the long grass, found a patch of sun and curled up as if to go to sleep!  Maybe a life in front of the cameras isn't for her!

Despite the petulance Honey bagged second place (beaten only by SHAKs own Hope so we'll let that one go) as best rescue dog and got a 'shout out' by the organisers telling people she's looking for a new home.    After all the excitement Honey headed off back to the kennels with Sheena, Roger, Hope and her rosettes to show off. I have since been informed mind you that on the way in to the kennels she managed to find a puddle to roll in and get rid of that 'horrible' clean smell.  Really glad I put all that effort into bathing her...

It is one of the hardest things in the world to have to take the dogs back to the kennels after I've had them away for weekends but it helps us to know what kind of home we're looking for for them and any foibles they may have so it is hopefully worth it if someone comes forward for them.  It was particularly difficult to watch Honey disappear up the road in the back of Sheena's car because she really is the most loveable little dog and we all desperately hope someone decides to give her the home she deserves.  Trust me, with a bit of work you'd have an amazing companion there. There's nothing quite like her standing on her back legs to give you a little cuddle when you crouch down to say hello to her.

Another Great Day At Hillheads.....

Yesterday saw the third annual Hillheads Dog Training Club Show in aid of SHAK, and by all reports it sounds as if this was the best yet! You'll see more from the day in later posts, but I just wanted to thank everyone who made this day such a success for us. That's Brian and all the team down at Hillheads for once again thinking of us when it came to planning their day, to Joan and Sheila and the rest of the fundraising team who raised another fantastic amount, to all the SHAK dogs and handlers/owners who popped in for a visit, and of course to everyone who turned out despite the iffy weather forecast to support the event! Four figures were once again achieved which is truly amazing, so thank you all so much.

Speaking of SHAK dogs making an appearance, we managed to do well in some of the shows too. I'm sure there was no bias from the judges, because the fact that these dogs are even enjoying a day out like this makes them all winners in my eyes.

But the rosettes were awarded as follows, and I know there was some really proud Mums and Dads.

Blue 1st in Dog most like owner (John)

Hope 1st in Best Rescue & Best Veteran

Honey 2nd Rescue  & 4th in Appealing eyes

Cole 4th Best Rescue

But no one is prouder of that bunch than me.

Brodie Brings The Cakes.....

It was great to see Brodie today, as his new family brought him in to say hi. He came baring gifts, and I have to say they were perhaps the most fantastic cup cakes I have ever seen. What do you think? Maybes appearing at a SHAK Tombola near you soon!
He looks in great condition, but it has to be said that Mona looked so sad when we took him to see her. Still was great to see him, and the team loved the cakes.

Little Joe Makes The Best Of It.....

More good news, as another SHAK dog has gone into a home this weekend. Little Joe came to us abandoned and roaming the streets. This weekend he is recuperating from being neutered in a new potential Forever Foster home, making 2 legged and canine friends. How anyone could kick this little cutie out is beyind me, but then I lost faith in society a long time ago.

SHAK Super Sunday.....

If your looking to brave the rain this weekend, please don't forget the fun day at Hillheads Dog Training Club in Whitley Bay or Derek down at Fountainhead Car Park, Seaton Sluice. Both are great trips out, and who knows you may even get to meet some SHAK dogs.

Hope Is Well Enough For Neutering.....

Pharaoh wasn't the only one in getting neutered today, as I'm delighted to say after months of hard work from Sheena, Hope was deemed fit and well enough to get speyed. Anyone who doesn't know Hope's story, here is a photo taken the day I collected her:

Hard to believe this dog would even survive never mind be well enough to be speyed. The work that Sheena has put into her is unbelievable, and tonight she is cuddling her Mam and getting pampered. I'm not sure who will be enjoying the cuddles the most,l but I know you both deserve them.

Pharaoh Leaves The Pyramid.....

Continuing on with the promise I made last week, I'm delighted to announce that Pharaoh has now moved into a new Forever Foster home. Another that was abandoned as a stray, Pharaoh is a sensitive soul, and he's had a busy 24 hours. A sleepover at my house yesterday (on which he was impeccable) before a trip to the vets to get neutered, then off to his new home, the big guy took it all in his stride. As you can see from the photographs below, he made some good friends along the way and was a pleasure to look after.

SHAK Super Sunday.....

In true SKY Sports fashion, this Sunday is a true SHAK Super Sunday. First off is the third Hillheads Dog Training Club Fun Day in aid of SHAK. Why not pop down, have some fun with your dog, meet some of ours and introduce yourself to a great dog training club.

After all that excitement why not nip to Seaton Sluice, put your feet up, have a coffee and enjoy some good craik at Dereks at Fountainhead Car Park?

All In A Days Work.....

The fascinating thing about this charity is that it is very much hands on as Lynn demonstrated on her day off from work yesterday.

Laser, on the left with his best pal Murphy.
Having been showing the signs of old age, Laser jumped into the SHAK van with Lynn and nipped off for a morning out and a trip to the vets. It wasn't the best news, as it appears that arthritis has began its intrusion, but we now have the handsome boy on Meds, so hopefully he will feel more comfortable and enjoy life as he did on the recent Hadrians Wall Weekend he had with Lynn.

Next off it was a quick turn around and a trip to another SHAK volunteer (who kindly donated her time and equipment) and Bodie was off to Serena's at Woof Cutz for a haircut. Despite our best efforts Bodie is constantly getting himself in a mess, and as these photos show, he looks amazing once all that mess has gone.

All one piece from his legs. Just a giant hairball really.

Serena's dad n a SMALL amount of what was removed.

In the dog sauna aka the blast drier.

All in a good days (off) work for Lynn.
Thanks to Lynn and Serena for making such a difference to both Laser and Murphy, in two completely different ways.

SHAK On Twitter.....

Having fallen out of love with Facebook, I feel like I have sold my soul to the devil, but SHAK is now on Twitter. Please spread the word and follow us @shakrescue  but please remember that we're on line to promote SHAK not to open the flood gates for requests to take the publics dogs!

Koko Goes Home.....

Following on from Jake I'm delighted to say that this weekend Koko has also gone to a Forever Foster home. Koko was hours from being put to sleep before she arrived with us, having been found as a stray and abused. She has worked hard at trusting people, and has left us for a comfy new bed and a Mam and Dad who love her dearly.

I don't think anyone at SHAK will forget that quivering, shaking mess that arrived with us, that blossomed into the sociable dog that helped so many including Hugo, and the confident beauty that walked out of our doors on Sunday. Go Koko.

Forever Foster Home Needed For Little Tai.....

We are also now looking for a Forever Foster home for little Tai who was found wondering the streets. Tai is currently in a temporary foster, as kennels is no place for a boy this size, but having started his vaccinations etc we are now looking for somewhere for him to begin his life. If you are interested in being considered for a home for Tai please email foreverfoster@shak.org.uk

Jake Goes Home.....

As I mentioned the other day, there's been a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes. Today I'm delighted to say that one of our more recent arrival, Jake, is waking up in his new Forever Foster home. Jake was found tied up and abandonned, unbelievable when you meet him and find out what a sweet boy he is.

Pictured above with Geoff, Jake loves everyone he meets including the vet, and we all wish him well with his new life.

Busy Times And Some Updates.....

I swear there isn't enough hours in the day for us right now, as things just seem to get busier and busier at the moment.Keep your eyes peeled as we may see three of our dogs move onto Forever Foster homes in the next few days. Some of who I haven't even had time to get on here yet! There's also a major project currently being put together that will literally bring SHAK into your sitting rooms, kitchens, anywhere..... So keep your eyes peeled for updates on that one.

I'm pleased to say that Holly is recovering from her operation well, and is even begining to put a little pressure on her poorly leg, and with Jude and Vicki she's in great hands.
I was at the vets myself this morning with Ava, and I'm delighted to say the concoction of medication has made a dramatic difference, and she doesn't need anymore. Her physical body must be feeling better, as we are currently experiencing a "season" which complicates things. Plan is to wait a couple of months now, and get her speyed, her entropian (eye operation) and her mammary tumour removed. She's such a beautiful girl, very much the Grandma of my k9 family, and if nothing else to of been able to give her the comfort of clearing those ears and eyes is so worth it.

Of course, another weekend is upon us, and that means that the SHAK Fundraising team is out raising funds for dogs such as the two ex strays mentioned above that need serious medical attention. Unfortunately the freak weather we witnessed yesterday has put pay to the Corbridge Show our Tombola was due to attend. However, as is the case EVERY Sunday Derek will be slogging his guts out down at Fountainhead Car Park at Seaton Sluice. This guy has put so much into what he does over the last two years for us, we'd all really appreciate it if this Sunday everyone braved the weather whatever it may be and popped down to say hello to him. Remember EVERY PENNY raised goes to help the dogs, so your support really does count. Thank you in advance.

Charlie Reaches Dizzy Heights.....

(Written By Jill Amery)

When I got up to go walking with a friend this morning, I decided I should give one of our furry pals the opportunity to join us.  So, after filling the car with towels, water bottle, doggy breakfast, treats and leads, I picked up Charlie.  He’s been a little lonely since Tammy his kennel-mate was re-homed a few weeks ago and deserved a break.

Charlie and I arrived early at the car park at Simonside Hills near Rothbury and took a toddle around there after he ate breakfast.  My friend Christine arrived and we headed off with Charlie behaving well on an extendable lead.  Once we left the road and all sign of traffic I let him off lead to enjoy the sights and particularly the smells, of the woods.  He kept stopping to sniff about and then sprint the 100 yards to catch us up again.

Although he seemed apprehensive at the scramble to the top of Simonside, Charlie the mountain goat tripped up there with much less effort than Christine and I exerted.  We stopped at the top to have a break (water, treats and cereal bars between the three of us).   Charlie took meeting people and other dogs in his stride until he came upon two men with a little Border Terrier who obviously gave him a fright and the anxiousness we are constantly working on, overcame him again.  He literally turned tail and bolted.  The men with the dog were great and gave him a wide berth to try and ease his stress.  I’ve learned that if I sit on the ground, Charlie will run back over and jump onto my knee.  So, as embarrassing as it was, I sat on the damp path and watched my little boy skip back to me.  Charlie had a bad start and although he has come on a long way, this was another example of why he needs a forever foster mam or dad.

Two and a half hours later and Charlie was back on lead.  I left him for a while in the car to sleep while Christine and I put the calories back on with cake and hot chocolate.  I returned to the car nervously.  Would the car still be in one piece?  Well, it was.  Charlie had behaved well and was also great on the hour long journey back to the kennels.  He spent the journey on the front seat, with one paw stretched over onto my knee.  Back in his kennel he scoffed his tea in no time at all and am sure he’ll sleep well tonight.

Charlie didn’t bark once on his day out and his recall was smashing, other than the incident when he became nervous.   He clearly wants a little affection and needs someone with time and patience to support him and work with him through his issues, so he can become more relaxed and enjoy life to the full!  (If it wasn’t for my husband, he would be mine)!

Love you Charlie!

Run Free Sweetheart.....

I was sad tonight to hear that one of my old SHAK sweethearts had left this world at 4pm this afternoon. Krysta came to us after she'd got herself into a bit of trouble in a home through another rescue. She had clearly been severely abused prior to this home, and had great deal of hair loss around her neck that we though had been caused by being chained up. Thanks to Suzanne and Kev of UK German Shepherd Rescue for giving her a home with them to see out the rest of her days, but today old age finally caught up with her. Krysta was a dear girl, who could be very proud of herself for the way she learnt to trust again. Run free sweetheart.

Get Well Soon.....

Tonight we're wishing Holly a speedy recovery after an operation to repair her Cruciate Ligament and to remove some screws from a previous injury that was causing her problems. Once again the staff at Moorview Vets have been brilliant, and everyone at SHAK including foster parents Vicki and Jude are very grateful. Get well soon Holly.

Brodie Sleepover.....Forever.....

Another one of our dogs that has enjoyed a busy social life of late is Brodie. A trip to the Seaside a few Saturdays ago turned into a sleep over the following Saturday, and he hasn't come back!

Brodie came to us stressed, frightened and totally mixed up. Yet in the time he has spent with us he has learnt that life and people can be fun, and anyone that has ever witnessed him pushing his ball through the kennel bars all day long will testify to that!

He has left little Mona (his kennel girlfriend and best pal) behind, but as you can see he has plenty of new friends although Maisy definitely appears to be his favourite.

Laser And Murphy's Weekend Away.....

Written by our own Lynn Sharp:

This weekend saw me taking another SHAK/Hadrian's Wall trip and guess what?  I still haven't finished the whole thing!!!  But more of that later.  On Saturday I got to fulfill a long term plan of mine and thanks to my willing assistant Liam I managed to take two of our long term dogs, Laser and Murphy, away for the weekend.

Laser and Murphy are two older german shepherds who have been with us a number of years now.  They are both very affectionate once they get to know you, they have always lived together and are very attached to each other.  Once again we were unsure how they would react away from the kennels so the weekend was both a trip outfor them and a little test for them.

In the middle of torrential rain on Saturday afternoon we managed to 'load' the two big lads into the back of a clio (!) only to be informed at that point by Steve that Murphy may not have been in the back of a car before!  Apart from an excessive interest by him in the rear windscreen wiper though both he and Laser settled brilliantly in the back of the car.  On arrival at my house they then had to face the ultimate test - a bath!!!  Laser reluctantly went first but once we got him in he stood really well while I gave him a good scrub down.  Unfortunately for my flooring Murphy decided to pass on the bath option but to be honest the plug may not have coped with the longhaired GSD shedding all over the place!

After a very settled night (not a squeak out of either of them even when Babsie the cat decided to sniff under the kitchen door) we loaded them back in the car again and headed over to Gilsland to take up where Jetta and I finished at Easter.  Despite the miserable predictions for the weather we managed to get a good four miles of the potential eleven done without encountering any rain.  The boys seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves with their noses barely lifting off the ground for the first two miles!  Unfortunately we managed to pick the four miles of Hadrian's Wall which doesn't have kissing gates, it has massive wooden styles which are really difficult for young, small dogs to master.  These were really hard for Laser and Murphy due to their size and not even between Liam and I could we get Murphy's large frame over them.

After completing the four miles we turned back to the nearest 'escape' point and after negotiating our way round three very defensive sheepdogs (maybe I have learnt something about reading dog body language and handling skills because I managed to distract them long enough for Liam, Laser and Murphy to sneak past without getting eaten) and took the two happy but exhausted boys back to mine.

Sunday night was spent with the two of them sound asleep - Laser in the hallway and Murphy in the living room.  Any time I moved it was like having two shadows as they followed me around the flat and the only demanding they did was for cuddles.  Once again there was hardly a squeak out of them apart from when some drunken bloke was
singing his way down the road and Murphy decided to tell him to shoosh, people were trying to sleep.

Monday morning saw the two lads getting a lift back to the kennels from Jill who provided the last piece in the logistical jigsaw of the weekend. This was an absolutely fab weekend and I really hope the big lads enjoyed it as much as I did.  Considering how long these two have been in kennels they did us proud. They were perfect in the house as I've said, asked out perfectly when they needed to, slept all night and never touched a thing they weren't meant to - including
trying to get on the couch!
